Most 17-year-olds have a lot to celebrate as they prepare to enter into adulthood: high school graduations, new chapters in their lives, and futures with endless possibilities. But 17-year-old Yancy had another reason to celebrate — she was recovering from a long battle with Hodgkin lymphoma, and could finally see brighter days ahead.
When Yancy learned that she’d be granted a wish through Make-A-Wish® British Colombia & Yukon, she couldn’t contain her excitement. She knew she wanted an adventure; an experience to celebrate her road to recovery. Yancy knew right away that she wanted to visit Iceland.
“It was an idea that came out of a school project,” she said. “And when I learned about the unique geography, it sounded like a really cool place to visit.”
Yancy’s volunteer wish granter, Jim, had the chance to meet with Yancy to talk about her trip early in the planning stages. He did some research about Iceland prior to their meeting. “I showed Yancy some pictures and descriptions of the attractions,” Jim said. “It turned out, however, that Yancy had already done a lot of research on her own.”
“She said her friends had all been looking forward to her going on her wish trip, and that she would be updating her social media channels to bring them along [virtually] on the ride with her.”
Yancy’s mother, who accompanied her on the trip, said that Yancy had an incredible time, and it was everything they had hoped it would be.
“The whole time I felt like I was dreaming,” Yancy said. “The Blue Lagoon was a highlight. It was like looking at a dream sequence — the incredible colour of the water, being able to swim in there, and the setting of it all in the mountains... it was so beautiful everywhere you looked… my words are inadequate to describe it.”
Yancy also loved the capital city of Reykjavik, where she and her mother walked around and explored everything the city had to offer. “Thank you to the Make-A-Wish® Foundation — the name says it all,” Yancy said. “I made a wish, and it came true. It was more than I could have imagined.”
When a wish is granted, it does much more than bring joy to a child’s heart. For kids like Yancy, who are faced with life-threatening medical conditions, a wish-come-true provides them with strength to battle through darkness and gives them hope for healthier, happier days ahead.
