Sarina’s wish was the perfect distraction
Sarina is a teenager with big dreams and the talent to make them a reality. Although she appears to be just like any other girl her age, Sarina is affected by a life-threatening seizure disorder. She has experienced seizures since she was nine years old and just last year, underwent surgery with the hope that her seizures would end. Unfortunately, her condition did not improve and she will continue to try other medications and possibly look into surgery again in the future.
When Sarina found out that she was eligible for a wish, she was excited to see if Make-A-Wish could pull off what she had in mind.
“It was always a dream of mine to perform on a big stage,” says Sarina on the day of her wish. “Tonight, I’m singing an original song of mine and it’s called Distracted.”
Sarina flew to Cleveland, Ohio to join Shawn Mendes onstage during a stop on his Illuminate World Tour. When Sarina arrived at sound check, she met Shawn for the first time. He reassured her that she was going to have an amazing performance and gave her some advice before she hit the stage.
When the big moment arrived, Sarina performed her beautiful song in front of 22,000 cheering fans. She asked the audience to shine their cell phone lights and the arena twinkled as she enjoyed her moment in the spotlight.
“This wish allowed us to have something to look forward to for the last year,” says Sarina’s mom. “From the beginning, all she wanted to do was show people that, even with obstacles in the way, anything is possible.”
“Thank you so much to each and every one of you for being a part of my insane, crazy, cool journey,” says Sarina. “I am still blown away by everything and I am proud to say it all happened with your help. I am glad you were with me every step of the way.”
When a wish is granted, it does much more than bring joy to a child’s heart. For kids like Sarina who are living with critical illnesses, a wish-come-true provides them with strength to battle through darkness and gives them hope for healthier, happier days ahead.
