In 2016 Hannah was diagnosed with cancer, requiring her to spend a lot of time in the hospital undergoing treatment rather than outside skateboarding and being active. The diagnosis and treatment was difficult for Hannah and her family, but Hannah found comfort and strength in watching her favourite television show, The Vampire Diaries. When asked what her one true wish was, Hannah wished to meet her role model and the star of her favourite TV show, Nina Dobrev. In January 2018, Hannah’s wish came true.
Hannah and her family flew down to Los Angeles via WestJet, where she was given the VIP treatment. On her Wish Day, Hannah was picked up in a limousine and driven to a restaurant where she was greeted by Nina. Hannah and Nina were able to spend the afternoon together which included lunch, a tour of an aeronautical museum, and ended with a private helicopter tour over Los Angeles! They saw famous landmarks like the Hollywood Sign, Santa Monica, Malibu, and many more! Hannah’s mom, Sophie, explained the change in her daughter’s spirit was instant and she was bursting with excitement! Of the time with Nina, Sophie said, “Nina made Hannah feel like she was alive again and gave her a positive outlook going forward.”
After Hannah’s Wish Day, Nina took to Instagram to express the impact Hannah had on her, saying, “I feel beyond lucky that I got to hang out with her today. Seeing her smile made me smile and warmed my heart beyond description.”
During her time in Los Angeles, Hannah also went to Universal Studios Hollywood™and had a blast riding roller coasters and getting a wand from The Wizarding World of Harry Potter™!
The most memorable part of the wish for Hannah was “meeting her role model,” whom she had wanted to meet for a long time. Hannah’s wish allowed her family to enjoy quality time together exploring a new place while forgetting about the stressors of everyday life for a little while. After meeting and spending the day with Nina, Hannah “has been on cloud nine ever since.”
