Soham’s Wish Makes A Difference

Some wishes are so big, they cross oceans and touch many lives.

When Soham was seven years old, her family moved to Canada from South Africa, settling in British Columbia. She enjoyed a carefree childhood like any other kid, until the day everything changed. Soham was diagnosed with a brain tumour that needed to be surgically removed.

“In 2014, I had brain surgery because I had a tumour in my left temporal lobe,” says Soham. “It was a cancerous tumour, so I also had to go through chemotherapy and radiation.”

When Soham found out that her condition made her eligible to receive a wish, she thought a lot about what she would want for herself and realized that she would be happiest using her wish to help others. After everything she had been through, Soham decided that it would bring her joy to know that her wish was helping people in need.

“I was born in South Africa and I know how difficult it is for children who are not as fortunate as me. I already have so much and I didn’t want to make the wish for myself, I’d rather make it for them,” Soham shares.

Make-A-Wish joined forces with the Food For Life Foundation and arranged for Soham to assist them in their work inDurban, the city she was born in, on the east coast of South Africa.

When she arrived in Durban, Soham spent the morning of her wish preparing a nutritious meal for a school of 1,000 underprivileged, inner-city children. She and her family enjoyed time at the school that afternoon, meeting with local children and serving up heaping plates of healthy food. Soham was thrilled to use her wish to bring some joy and excitement to the children.

“I want to thank Make-A-Wish. It made me so happy to see how much effort they put into my wish. I’m glad I chose to share my wish with others.”

Thank you, Soham, for sharing your wish and inspiring others with your story.

When a wish is granted, it does much more than bring joy to a child’s heart. For kids like Soham who are living with critical illnesses, a wish-come-true provides them with strength to battle through darkness and gives them hope for healthier, happier days ahead.
