Jared was in ICU after suffering a stroke & severe brain hemorrhage. Jared is living with Ehlers Danlos syndrome, a rare degenerative disease. He also suffered significant burns all over his body after a major house fire last fall.
To say he’s been through a lot would be an understatement.
At the same time Jared’s peers at school were all getting ready for prom, a few days away. Their biggest worry was how they would do their hair or what jewelry to wear to match their dress. More than anything, Jared wanted to be a part of that milestone with his classmates. Jared’s family reached out to us and wanted to know if there was any way we could help grant his wish to go to Prom in a helicopter. He wanted to travel from SickKids Hospital to his Prom at a golf course. His only request was that the helicopter wasn’t orange and didn’t say “medical.”
His medical team agreed to discharge Jared to attend his Prom with an ICU physician accompanying him. And Great Lakes Helicopter had a pilot available and were more than willing to ensure this wish came true.
The highly anticipated day arrived. Weather tried to delay plans, but nothing was going to stop us from ensuring Jared would get to Prom. His classmates were waiting outside, waving Make-A-Wish flags and cheering Jared’s name as the helicopter circled and touched down on the grass. Jared exited the helicopter beaming. It was a truly heartwarming moment for everyone. He exchanged a boutonniere and corsage with his date and was even able to get out of his wheelchair to bust a few moves on the dance floor. Another surprise and highlight for Jared was being crowned Prom King.
Jared's dad says that Jared beams when he shares the story of his prom experience. The memories from that night will help him through the difficult days ahead.
