International Childhood Cancer Day in Canada

Across Canada, childhood cancer continues to affect thousands of children and families every year, making awareness and community support more important than ever. Childhood is meant to be a time of carefree joy, exploration, and simple pleasures. But for thousands of families, everything changes in a single moment. When a doctor delivers a cancer diagnosis, life as they know it pauses, replaced by a journey filled with hospital visits and uncertainty.

International Childhood Cancer Day is on February 15 and is a time to recognize this reality. It is a day to stand with these resilient children and their families, helping to lift the weight from their shoulders. It is a day to rally together — offering encouragement, connection, and meaningful gestures that make a real difference in their daily lives.

The Reality of Childhood Cancer

For the families going through this devastating journey, a childhood cancer diagnosis changes life overnight — from daily routines to long hospital visits and endless treatments.
At Make-A-Wish® Canada, about 50% of the children we support are living with cancer, including Emma.

Emma was just 14 months old when she was diagnosed with cancer. The news was overwhelming for her family, but today she is a healthy 5-year-old who has completed treatment and experienced her life-changing wish: to feel the ocean. The Make-A-Wish Canada team organized a family trip to the Dominican Republic, creating unforgettable memories for the whole family. Read Emma’s story here.

We felt like we could finally breathe. For the first time in a long time, we weren’t just surviving — we were living!
– Shelly, Emma’s mom

4 Ways to Help Families Facing Childhood Cancer

If you’re wondering how to help families facing childhood cancer, these simple actions can make a lasting difference. You don’t need to be a doctor to have an impact. Sometimes, the most powerful support comes from simple, human gestures. Here are four ways you can support a family during this tough journey.

  1. Neighbourly Support: Parents of children undergoing treatment can often feel exhausted and overwhelmed. Small acts of kindness from friends, neighbours, or relatives can make a big difference. Simple gestures, like shovelling their driveway, helping with groceries, or tidying up around the house, can save them precious time and energy, allowing them to focus on caring for their child during this challenging journey.
  2. Keep the Kids Connected: Cancer treatment can isolate children from friends and school. Help them stay connected through virtual playdates, online games, or messages from classmates. These moments let them feel included, have fun, and just be kids.
  3. Share Helpful Resources: Childhood cancer is one of the toughest challenges a family can face. While no single solution fits every journey, sharing trusted resources can help families manage difficult moments with greater confidence and ease. This includes providing valuable strategies, such as coping mechanisms, to support families through these challenges.
  4. Help Children Receive Their Wishes: In 2025, Make-A-Wish Canada granted 1,835 wishes, around half of which were for children with cancer. Currently, over 3,500 kids across the country are waiting for their wish to be granted. Wishes to have a puppy, to meet their hero, taking a special trip, building a backyard playset and more. By donating to Make-A-Wish Canada, you can help us reach these kids faster. Your support has the power to turn a waiting list into a list of dreams come true.

Together, We Can Restore Hope

A wish is more than just a fleeting moment. Wishes Are Medicine. For children facing a cancer diagnosis, a wish can play a powerful role in healing and resilience during treatment. It can be the spark that helps them believe in a brighter tomorrow. It gives them back the piece of their childhood that cancer tried to take away.
