Helping Wishes Take Flight: A Legacy Donor’s Wish to Give Back
John Holderberg, known as “Guitar Johnny,” by his close friends and family, had a deep appreciation for life’s simple joys: music, animals, travelling, and the outdoors. Before his passing, he was a dedicated, hardworking man whose 30-year career at Air Canada in Calgary provided him the unique opportunity to meet wish kids and their families.
As a senior lead hand, John was entrusted with helping wish kids at the very start of their wish trip. He ensured each child could travel safely and comfortably to their dream destination by carefully boarding their medical devices and equipment. Hearing wish kids’ stories and meeting their families left a lasting impression on him. When he recounted these moments to his cousin, Michael, he would often be moved to tears.
“He wanted to do all he could to make [each] child smile,” said Michael, “That’s what his goal was, that was his wish.”
John’s wish to help children facing critical illnesses continues to make an impact. By leaving Make-A-Wish Canada a gift in his will, he is ensuring that future wish kids and their families can experience moments of joy, hope, and strength as they navigate difficult medical journeys.
John helped wishes take flight, and now, thanks to his legacy, they always will.
