Eight-year-old Calvin is full of energy, curiosity, and joy. He loves soccer, school, and spending time with friends—finally being able to enjoy the childhood he missed in his early years.
Calvin’s medical journey began just before Thanksgiving in 2017, when he was rushed to the Alberta Children’s Hospital after weeks of illness. His family learned that his kidneys were failing, and he would need to start dialysis immediately. “It was terrifying,” said Calvin’s mom Christine. “All I could do was hold him and tell him he was strong.”
For the next three years, Calvin underwent 12-hour peritoneal dialysis treatments every night at home. A serious complication in 2020 led to a stay in the ICU and a switch to hemodialysis—four hours a day, four times a week. Despite a demanding routine filled with treatments, surgeries, and emergency visits, his family worked hard to give Calvin a joyful and active life. On January 25, 2022, Calvin received a life-saving kidney transplant.
Now, four years post-transplant and thriving, Calvin’s wish to go to his favourite theme park gave his entire family a much-needed chance to relax, reconnect, and make happy memories together. From meeting his favourite characters to riding his first rollercoaster, playing mini golf, and enjoying late-night treats, every moment was unforgettable. “During the fireworks, we heard the words, ‘This is where you’re meant to be,’” said Christine. “It was emotional—we reflected on our journey and felt so much gratitude. This wish gave us joy, healing, and memories we’ll hold forever.”
