Diagnosed with cancer at the age of 11, which had spread extensively, Ansh’s battle with the illness lasted about a year and included chemotherapy, radiation, a bone marrow transplant, and two additional surgeries. It was a difficult journey, especially for someone so young.
Ansh’s parents chose not to tell him about the diagnosis right away, knowing it would cause him to worry. But Ansh sensed that something was wrong. Even so, he wasn’t sad or scared. “My parents were supporting me, and I knew the doctors were trying their best to treat me,” he shares. During his treatment, Ansh found also comfort in playing online games with his friends on his PlayStation. It helped him stay connected and brought him moments of joy.
But there were hard days too. “When things were at their worst, it felt like I couldn’t move, do anything,” Ansh recalls. “All I could do was sleep.” Pain and exhaustion made it impossible to do the things kids his age normally enjoy, and that was the hardest part.
When Ansh was referred for a wish in the middle of 2022, he chose to visit his favourite theme park. “I knew my family struggled equally as much as I did, and we all deserved a break,” he says. The trip was filled with highlights, especially the rollercoasters and the overall fun of the amusement parks. His favourite memory? Riding a massive rollercoaster that his sister and dad forced him to try and loving every second of it.
For his parents, Tolsi and Vinu, the most meaningful part was seeing Ansh so happy after everything he had been through. “It was amazing to see our child so happy and what the wish did for him,” they shared. “He’s a lot more thankful and gracious for things now.”
Today, Ansh’s health is great. He’s back to playing sports, having fun, and doing well in school. To the MakeA-Wish Canada team, Tolsi and Vinu offer heartfelt thanks: “Without this wish, I don’t think our child would be the same kid he is now.
