Seven-year-old Adriana’s smile lights up every room. A bright and imaginative child who loves princesses, she approaches life with kindness, courage, and resilience.
That’s why it was such a shock when just before her fourth birthday, after a high fever and sudden symptoms led to an emergency room visit, Adriana was diagnosed with leukemia. Her early childhood quickly shifted from playdates and preschool to hospital rooms and chemotherapy. Her treatment, which stretched over two years, came with complex side effects and hardships that impacted every aspect of her daily life. Through it all, Adriana faced each challenge with strength and determination.
The diagnosis changed everything for her family. Life became a cycle of clinic visits, medications, cancelled vacations, and isolation. Her little brother, who was just 18 months old at the time, had to grow up fast, often cared for by others while their parents focused on Adriana’s treatment. Adriana’s mom, Alexandra, shared that “it felt like cancer had stolen not just her health, but her childhood, and our family’s peace.” Despite the hardships, the family’s bond only grew stronger, becoming closer, more resilient, and more grateful for every moment they got together.
Having completed her treatment, Adriana was introduced to Make-A-Wish® Canada. Her wish? To feast with her favourite princesses. It’s a dream she held onto ever since first being admitted to the hospital upon her diagnosis and at six years old, her wish was granted.
“This wish…was… more than a vacation,” Alexandra shared. “This wish felt like the start of a new chapter for our family. It’s the kickoff to all the ‘normal’ things we’ve missed and a celebration of how far she’s come. Sharing this magical experience together, free from hospitals and worry and being able to watch Adriana and her brother just be kids again — laughing, playing, and living without fear — was the greatest gift.”
Adriana is regaining strength each day, moving forward with hope, resilience, and the unstoppable spirit that has carried her through her journey.
