Lukah’s imagination is boundless. When playing in the water or dressing up with her older sister Berlynn, Lukah is in a happy world of her own. The whimsical five-year-old loves Disney princesses, chocolate cake and wishes she could freeze things on command like her idol, Elsa.

Lukah was born a healthy baby who reached all her milestones. Just before her first birthday, a benign tumour was found in her abdomen. Removing the tumour was extremely complicated and resulted in multi-organ failure. Lukah was immediately airlifted to hospital and needed a multi-organ transplant to survive. Lukah waited in the pediatric intensive care unit for seven agonizing weeks until a donor became available. She received five transplanted organs at 14 months old and was the first girl in Western Canada to do so. Her mom Tanis says her daughter still spends a lot of time in the hospital, takes daily medication, but lives a “full and beautiful life”.

Lukah’s love of princesses and everything Disney inspired her wish to visit Walt Disney World for her wish. The family stayed at Give Kids The World Village, a non-profit resort in Kissimmee, Florida. “It was amazing having everything taken care of and thought out for us ahead of time. We could truly just sit back and enjoy,” said Tanis. “We felt very emotional the majority of the time and absolutely loved watching our kids experience this type of joy after so much stress.”

Hope is essential for children with critical illnesses, and its life-changing power is unlocked when wishes like Lukah’s are granted. Together we can continue to transform lives, one wish at a time.
