For serious hockey fan, Fionn, when it came to choosing a wish there was only one that would do: To become a member of his favourite NHL hockey team, the Calgary Flames. At a packed news conference on Fionn’s wish day, Flames General Manager, Brad Treliving, announced the signing of the nine-year-old defenceman to a one-day contract with the team.
Fionn’s dad, Kelvin, told reporters that this is when the magnitude of the day started to set in. "To see him sitting there, beside Brad Treliving, to then realize we're actually here, that this is really happening,” says Kelvin. "We're part of Make-A-Wish for a reason, so to be able to see that wish actually come true, you honestly can't put it into words.”
While fielding questions, Treliving commented that the team is always on the lookout for courageous players who are ready to go into battle. Born 12 weeks early, Fionn has faced medical challenges, including a life-threatening heart condition, since day one. He is the definition of courage.
After signing the contract and answering media questions, Fionn and his brothers later joined the Flames on the ice for an afternoon skate where Fionn showed off his impressive puck-handling skills in his sledge.
The day was indeed a wish-come-true. The action-packed schedule saw Fionn and his brothers playing ball hockey in the halls of the Saddledome and hanging out with their favourite Flames. It was a memorable wish day not only for Fionn and his family, but for the Flames players as well.
“I think it puts everything in perspective,” says Calgary-born goaltender, Chad Johnson. “It helps you realize how lucky you are to be where you are. When you see a young guy like him, you pinch yourself. You realize you actually are what so many kids want to be, a Flames hockey player; you’re reminded that you’re living someone else’s dream.”
Thank you to the entire Calgary Flames organization and Calgary Flames Foundation for welcoming Fionn and his family for an unforgettable wish experience!
