At Make-A-Wish® we are motivated to do everything we can to bring joy into the lives of children living with life-threatening medical conditions. We are thrilled when families send us photos from their wish trips; of their children enjoying their new room makeovers; or of them playing with toys from their shopping sprees. Seeing children smile again after their lives have been disrupted by critical illnesses is truly priceless.
Sometimes, the impact of a wish-come-true can extend beyond the child and positively affect and inspire an entire community. Such is the case with Tysen, a former wish child from Make-A-Wish® Eastern Ontario.
In 2012, Tysen, who battles Pfeiffer syndrome (a genetic disorder that affects bone growth), received his wish to meet his favourite celebrity, actor Adam Sandler. This life-changing experience motivated Tysen to give back to his community, and in 2013, he launched Tysen’s Mission to a Million to help raise one million dollars for Make-A-Wish. Tysen wanted to help make other kids’ dreams become reality.
Tysen, now 16 years old, is three years into his mission for Make-A-Wish. This November, at a Make-A-Wish® International conference held in in Mumbai, India,Tysen was awarded the “Most Inspiring Act of Kindness” award — as voted on by Make-A-Wish representatives from across the globe.
Tysen’s fundraising efforts have just surpassed the $600,000 mark, and he has helped grant 60 wishes for children in Eastern Ontario. His tireless efforts and countless hours of volunteer work in the community have earned him several awards, including the Canadian Living Me to We Award (In the Community category), and last year he was honoured as “Amazing Person of the Year” by CTV Ottawa. Most recently, Tysen was named one of the top 100 Visionary Leaders (under 30) by Real Leaders.
Tysen’s one simple wish has multiplied many times over and has helped create lifelong memories for 60 families who have been through some very difficult times. He is an incredible fundraiser and enthusiastic ambassador for Make-A-Wish, and we couldn’t be more grateful for his support of our magical mission.
Congratulations on all that you have achieved Tysen, and thank you for advocating for our wish kids. Your voice, your story and your generosity have now inspired people around the world.
