  • Former Make-A-Wish® Recipient Wins Canadian Living Me to We Award

2015-09

September 8, 2015, TORONTO - Make-A-Wish® Eastern Ontario wish recipient, Tysen, 15, has received a Canadian Living Me to We Award (In the Community category) for his pursuit to raise $1 million to help grant the wishes of other children living with life-threatening medical conditions.

“We are incredibly proud of Tysen’s mission to pay it forward and help make 100 magical wishes come true,” says Tanya Desjardins, CEO, Make-A-Wish Eastern Ontario. “Tysen is a true role model and an inspiration to us all. We commend he and his family for their courage, perseverance and selfless efforts to help young people realize their one true wish at a time when they need it most. Congratulations!

Canadian Living’s Me to We Awards were created in 2005 in partnership with Me to We co-founders, Craig and Marc Kielburger, to recognize outstanding Canadians. The Awards are segmented into six categories: Youth in Action (13-17), Youth in Action (12 and under), In the Community, Social Action, Educator and Free The Children Youth.

In 2012, Tysen, who battles Pfeiffer syndrome (a genetic disorder that prematurely fuses bones in the body, affecting growth), received his wish to meet his favourite celebrity. Since the life-changing experience, Tysen was determined to give back to his community and help Make-A-Wish Eastern Ontario grant wishes for other kids with serious illnesses. Tysen’s Mission to a Million quickly came to fruition, attracting national attention and raising more than $330,000 to date for the local chapter.

“I'm so happy to finally share this exciting news and thank everyone who voted for me,” says Tysen. “It's such an honour to win such an amazing award and so nice that people took the time to vote.”

1,000 donation to a registered charity of choice in Canada, a commemorative award and coverage in the October 2015 issue of Canadian Living magazine and on metowe.com. Winners will also be recognized during We Day in Toronto this fall.
