Alex is an outgoing eight-year-old living with cystic fibrosis, a critical illness that affects his digestive system and lungs, making it a challenge to eat and breathe.
Alex requires a gastrostomy tube and breathing equipment at all times, but that hasn’t stopped him from playing the sport he loves most: hockey. It was no surprise that this Vancouver Canucks superfan wished to skate with his favourite hockey players, Daniel and Henrik Sedin.
Alex and his family flew to Vancouver for this once-in-a-lifetime experience to meet the Sedins. Alex showed the team his stickhandling skills and even scored some goals. The Canucks welcomed him like he was a member of the team.
On his wish day, Alex was no longer a sick kid, he was an NHL hockey player. Alex’s wish gave him and his family special memories to help them through a very difficult time.
“The most memorable part for Alex was skating with the team and being treated like an old friend. The best part for us, as parents, was seeing the smile on his face,” says Janae, Alex’s mom.
Over the years, the Sedin brothers have helped grant a number of wishes for kids living with critical illnesses. Thank you to Daniel and Henrik for being incredible wish granters. We wish you a happy and relaxing retirement!
